Things to Avoid When Designing for Print

Graphic design is no easy task. There are various elements that need to be considered, one of which is the format of the files that need to be printed.

This is what makes digital printing in California challenging. They not only have to be aware of the rules but also need to keep a keen eye out for mistakes clients might make.

To help, here are a couple of common things clients tend to overlook and need to improve on:

  • RGB vs CMYK
Printers produce color by using four-colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Digital screens produce images using three colors: Red, Green, and Blue; make sure your printed output is in the CMYK format.
  • Pixels per inch
Standard printing, like brochures and business cards, are viewed at a closer distance, so images should be sized to 300 ppi or higher
  • Convert to vectors
When designing for large format, it’s recommended to supply artwork in vector form, to make it easier for the printers to scale your work when needed
